Nine Seamen Killed in Fire on Freighter Bound for Houston

A tragic maritime accident on board a freighter bound for Houston, Texas last month killed 9 crew members. The vessel caught fire off the Venezuela coast on Christmas Day. At least 5 people were injured in the accident.
The vessel Aegean Wind, was hauling 37,000 tons of iron ore when the fire broke out just before dawn in the mess hall. Six of the nine dead were Filipinos, and the remaining were Greek. Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board determined that failure of a pressurized component on the port main propulsion hydraulic system was the cause of an engine room fire on a small passenger vessel.
