UK Health Agency Reports Increase in Offshore Injuries

As we deal with the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon explosion off US waters, it somehow feels worse to learn that offshore workers are not much safer on the other side of the pond either.  Britain's Health and Safety Executive is pulling up the offshore oil and gas industry for an increasing number of injuries and fatalities.  According to the agency, there has been an increase in major injuries and fatalities and unplanned hydrocarbon releases. WaPo Focuses on Stresses of Oil Rig Work

Stressful work conditions, inadequate training, and a work culture that is more dollar-centric than focused on safety - all these and other factors lead to hundreds of oil rig worker injuries every year.  The Washington Post has a special report on the kind of work environment that contributes to these injuries. Eleven Offshore Workers Remain Missing after Louisiana Oil Rig Explosion

It’s an anxious wait for the families of 11 offshore workers who still remain missing after an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion occurred at about 10 PM on Tuesday night.  At least seven workers have sustained critical injuries in the explosion. Two of the severely injured workers have been taken to a burn center in Mobile, Alabama while two more have been taken to a New Orleans hospital. The Jones Act – What Is It?

Injured seamen and offshore workers often ask me to explain their possible remedies under the Jones Act and to explain the Jones Act to them. 

The Jones Act is really a pretty straightforward set of rules first passed by Congress is 1920 and known as The Merchant Marine Act of 1920.  The statute itself is short.  Although the statute is short and can be read in less than 5 minutes, like ship that's been in the water a long time, the Jones Act has a lot of barnacles in the form of Court opinions that interpret it's provision.Read More »
