Mississippi Barge Accident Injures 3 Towboat Workers

A barge accident on the Mississippi River last week left three towboat workers injured, a chemical spill in the river and the closure of 7 miles of the waterway. The accident occurred on Monday night. A 128-foot towboat Merrick Jones, pushing 26 barges collided with the 87-foot towing barge, Dixie Express, which was pushing two barges of acrylonitrile. A significant amount of the acrylonitrile was discharged into the river after the collision. The US Coast Guard was on the scene of the collision immediately. Coast Guard Releases Audiotapes from Delaware River Duck Boat-Barge Accident

The US Coast Guard this week released audiotapes from radio traffic, recorded around the time that an amphibious “Ride the Ducks” tourist boat was struck by a barge on the Delaware River in Philadelphia.  The tapes give some indication about the kind of mayhem that surrounded the moment when a barge plowed through a stalled tourist boat.  The boat sank, and all passengers on the boat fell into the water.  Two Hungarian tourists were killed. Louisiana Maritime Worker Files Whistleblower Lawsuit against Barge Company

Earlier this month, I blogged about a fatal accident involving a barge and fishing boat in Tennessee that killed two fishermen. The barge in that accident belonged to a company in Louisiana, called Seredino Inc. That accident was not the first involving the Chattanooga-based company. In June 2009, another man was killed in a similar accident involving a Seredino barge and a fishing boat. Court upholds $19,000,000.00 Maritime Law Verdict

The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit has upheld a $19,000,000 verdict in a maritime injury case.

The case, styled In re Superior Construction Co., Inc. v. Charles Brock et al, involved injuries to recreational boaters.

Superior Construction Company was the general contractor for the Florida Department of Transportation’s work expanding the Blanding Boulevard Bridge over the Cedar River in Jacksonville, Florida.  The company frequently stationed the barge and the tug so that recreational boaters could  pass under the bridge.  On December 29, 2001, the company tied the barge and the tug so that they...
